Review: Duck! (Avian Shifters #1) by Kim Dare

Sunday, July 2

My rating:
2.5 Stars…

What I loved:

It was a very committed kind of D/s relationship, like the 24/7 kind, and I liked the insight into something I don't know much about. Ms Dare did a really good job of painting Ori & Raynard as characters who were, down to their very cores, meant to live this way.

Ori was adorable. His life has been pretty crap since he did a partial shift, and he's been treated as the lowest of the low in the nest. I was so thankful that Raynard came and took him away from that, and took care of him.

I liked the quirkiness of an avian shifter story. I've only read 4 or 5 shifter stories, so I enjoyed a bird one.

What I didn’t love:

The middle of the story moved so slow for me. From 25% to around 60% I had to actively make myself tune in to what I was reading. I knew I wanted to get to the end because I wanted to know what happened with Ori, but my brain just wouldn't stay connected to the story.

It could be that this kind of D/s relationship doesn't do it for me, or because I didn't get a lot of passion from Ori & Raynard, or because of how serious everything was... whatever it was, I couldn't get invested in the middle there.

Also, I didn't like how Raynard just tried to dump Ori, and how Ori had to beg. The bit where Ori tries to compromise and offers to wait on both Raynard and a new submissive if Raynard will only take him back?

Good writing, good editing, but I just didn't connect with the story. I'd be keen to read a different theme by Ms Dare, though.
