Review: The Half of Us (Family #4) by Cardeno C.

My rating:
5 Stars…
Quote…The entire interaction had him on edge. He felt like he was waging a battle inside himself and he had no idea why, over what, or what side he was on.

What I loved:

This review would be stupid long if I listed everything that made it amazing, so I'll try and dial it down...

The best thing for me was that this was a really heartwarming, sincere love story, with candid, bighearted, loving characters who want the best for each other. No angst, very little drama, no darkness.
Quote…You look like someone pissed on your puppy."
"I think the saying is 'pissed on your cereal' or 'kicked your puppy,'" Jason corrected.
Abe is wonderful. He's full of empathy, and compassion, and understanding, and he's so cruisy - like, even when Jason is a bit of a temperamental fuckknuckle, Abe can laugh it off and get to the bottom of Jason's issue. wink, wink. Abe knows what he wants, and he goes for it with respect, love, and kindness. The scene where Jason flips out on the phone to Abe about seeing him that night? Perfect. I wanted to high five Abe so hard. Or cuddle him. And when he talks to Jason's son about moving in?

Jason was (outwardly) this bristly, meticulous, insensitive manwhore, but inwardly he was beautiful. He dreamed of a happy family life but he's gone about everything all wrong. And hallelujah for Angela & Abe helping him figure his shit out so he could step up and achieve his dream. And also, in some ways he was like a big dumb ox.
Quote…Not knowing how to respond, he stayed quiet. It was the deer-in-the-headlights approach, and he braced himself to be run over.
Angela. Her relationship with Jason, how well she understands him, and how she embraces him now, is so cool. The handbag scene when she has lunch with Jase and Abe? I snortled all through that. They have the easygoing banter that comes with knowing each other so well, but there's the added awkwardness with the fact they're divorced to contend with. CC navigated their relationship so well.
Quote…In case you listen to the words that come out of your mouth as well as you listen to what comes out of mine, which is to say not well, I'll point out that you just said the man you're seeing would never leave you. (...) Like it or not, you just confirmed your status as the stable-relationship role model," Angela said.
"That's disturbing."
The Epilogue! It was so many levels of deliciousness. We got the ultra smut, and the romance, and the family dynamic, and Jason doing dumb shit. Loved it.

What I didn’t love:

Introducing the Come at me, brah owls. Because I have nothing else to put here.

I didn't know this was part of a series when I read it, but yay me for discovering I have so many CC books to read now! This story was amazing, one of the best contemporary romances I've met so far.
