"And if that's what you want, for me to continue to be alone and unloved, then you can go to the devil."
"You were never alone," he said harshly. "You've never been unloved."
He has tried hard to forget her.
Kev Merripen has longed for the beautiful, well-bred Winnifred Hathaway ever since her family rescued him from the brink of death when he was just a boy. But this handsome Gypsy is a man of mysterious origins—and he fears that the darkness of his past could crush delicate, luminous Win. So Kev refuses to submit to temptation... and before long Win is torn from him by a devastating twist of fate.
Can she remember the man he once was?
Then, Win returns to England... only to find that Kev has hardened into a man who will deny love at all costs. Meantime, an attractive, seductive suitor has set his sights on Win. It’s now or never for Kev to make his move. But first, he must confront a dangerous secret about his destiny—or risk losing the only woman he has lived for...
Win had always thought Kev Merripen was beautiful, in the way that an austere landscape or a wintry day could be beautiful.
Win was such a gorgeous heroine! When I read Amelia and Cam's story, I thought Winnifred seemed a bit bland. Pretty, but sickly, and soft spoken, and just... a bit blah but I was so happy to be wrong! She was a strong, determined, sweet and honest character - through everything that happens in this book (and a shit ton happens) she is always true to herself and her feelings. I could read about Win forever ♥
Kev. For all that his poor tortured soul went through as a kid, he has grown into such an amazing man. I loved his loyalty and how protective he was when it came to the people he loved. There was nothing easy about Kev, and even though he was frustrating as shit, Ms Kleypas shows us why he's that way. Because of that, I couldn't help but love him in all his stubborn, difficult, prickly glory. And his underlying, undying devotion to Win was insane deliciousness.
I will follow you, he thought, whatever your fate is.
Win was the only thing on earth he had ever wanted. She would not leave without him.
Leo was hilarious - I'm excited like a fat kid outside a bakery, to get to Married by Morning, which is Leo & Catherine's story. I love how Leo has recovered somewhat from all his vices, and is working to be the man his family needs.
"I have a way with animals. They tend to acknowledge me as one of their own."
- Leo to Catherine
The twists and turns this story takes. The mystery and intrigue in finding Cam's tribe, and Kev's, and what happens with Dr. Harrow. All of it was just so good!
And then! The end of chapter 16 happens.
What a mongrel the rom baro was! Fuck that guy.
Also, that time Win lied. Not cool, bro, not cool. But I understand why she did it, and I can't stay mad at her for that.
Win couldn't help chuckling. "For heaven's sake. If this street was paved with gold and angels were sweeping it, you would still say it was too rough and dirty for me. You must rid yourself of this habit of protecting me."
"Not while I live."
